چکیده

The electron-impact ionization cross section for hydrogen near threshold is calculated using both timedependent wave-packet and time-dependent Green’s-function methods. The time-dependent Green’s-function method also allows the calculation of the elastic cross section. The need for absorbing potentials was removed by allowing our fast waves to leave our two-dimensional grid. Two different models are used for the Coulomb interaction between the electrons: a cusp model with v(r1 ,r2)51/r. and a linear model with v(r1 ,r2)51/(r11r2), both with all angular momenta set to zero. Between 0.2 and 2.0 eV the cusp model cross section may exhibit an exponential suppression, while the linear model cross section follows a power-law behavior with an exponent of 1.1 with no noticeable oscillations. The results of the numerical experiments are compared with previous classical and quantal predictions extending back over 40 years to the pioneering work of Wannier. @S1050-2947~97!04305-9#

Differential cross sections in the ejected energy for an L50 model of the electron-impact ionization of hydrogen

A calculational procedure is formulated for extracting differential cross sections in the ejected energy from a time-dependent wave-packet method for the electron ionization of hydrogen. The procedure is applied to an s-wave model for electron-hydrogen scattering. In contrast to recent time-independent methods, the differential cross sections are found to be smooth and symmetric. @S1050-2947~97...

Time-dependent close-coupling calculations of the triple-differential cross section for electron-impact ionization of hydrogen

The formulation of the time-dependent close-coupling method is extended to allow the calculation of electron-impact triple-differential cross sections for atoms. The fully quantal method is applied to the electronimpact ionization of hydrogen at an incident energy of 54.4 eV for various scattering geometries. The timedependent close-coupling results are found to be in very good agreement with t...

Electron-impact ionization of highly excited hydrogenlike ions in a collinear s-wave model

We report results from collinear time-dependent close-coupling TDCC , distorted-wave DW , and R matrix with pseudostates calculations for the electron-impact ionization of H-like ions up to Z=6 within an s-wave model. We compare the results of these calculations with those from a collinear classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculation to investigate the correspondence between the quantal and cla...

The effects of classical resonance islands in time-dependent quantum mechanics

We investigate the effect of the main classical resonance island on the quantal ionization probabilities for an excited one-dimensional hydrogen atom perturbed by a near resonant, periodic electric field. The classical and quantal ionization probabilities produced by a periodic electric field near the (1:1)-resonance show similarities and also remarkable differences; specifically both probabili...

Threshold electron-impact ionization mechanism for hydrogen atoms.

The near-threshold evolution of electron-impact ionization of hydrogen is revealed with measurements of the angular and energy correlations of the outgoing electrons down to 0.05 eV. The single-, double-, and triple-differential cross sections in the perpendicular plane are measured simultaneously using a dual wedge-and-strip detector on a single-toroidal energy analyzer, avoiding many experime...
